About Crossy Road

Crossy Road turns the old joke about a chicken crossing the road into an endless arcade challenge. Developed by Australian studio Hipster Whale and released in 2014, it borrows the spirit of Frogger and adds blocky voxel graphics, a huge roster of collectible characters, and a world that keeps scrolling forward as long as you survive. Its bite-sized runs make it ideal for a quick break.

Each hop takes you across a new strip of danger: highways full of cars and trucks, rivers with drifting logs, and railroad tracks where trains appear with little warning. Standing still is not safe either, since waiting too long gets you snatched by an eagle. The result is a game that is easy to learn, tense to play, and very hard to put down after one more try.

How to play Crossy Road

Move your character forward one tile at a time, dodging traffic and hazards on each lane. Roads have cars and trucks moving at different speeds, rivers require you to hop onto floating logs or lily pads, and train tracks flash a warning light before a train speeds through. Each forward hop adds a point to your score. You can also step sideways or backward to line up safer paths. The game never ends on its own, so the aim is to go as far as possible. Coins along the way help unlock new characters.

Tips & strategy

  1. Watch train track signals; when the light flashes, wait until the train passes.
  2. On rivers, time your jumps so you land near the center of logs, not the edges.
  3. Do not linger too long in one spot, or the eagle will swoop in and end your run.
  4. Move sideways to line up with gaps in traffic rather than forcing forward hops.
  5. Pay attention to lane speeds; slow cars can hide fast ones behind them.

Game features

  • Endless voxel-style arcade hopping
  • Roads, rivers, and train tracks
  • Many unlockable characters
  • Simple controls with deep timing

Crossy Road FAQ

Is Crossy Road like Frogger?

Yes, it is heavily inspired by Frogger. Both games have you moving across lanes of traffic and water. Crossy Road makes it endless, adds collectible characters, and includes a time pressure element in the form of an eagle that grabs you if you stand still too long. The blocky graphics give it its own style.

What happens if you stand still in Crossy Road?

If you stay in one place or move backward for too long, an eagle swoops down and grabs your character, ending the run. This rule keeps you moving forward and stops players from waiting for perfect openings forever. Keep hopping regularly, even sideways, to avoid it.

Can I play Crossy Road on a Chromebook?

Yes. The browser version runs well on Chromebooks and school laptops, and it needs only arrow keys or WASD. Open it on Classroom 6X and start hopping without any download. On tablets and touch-enabled Chromebooks, you can tap and swipe to move just like on the mobile version.
