Friday Night Funkin
Match the arrows, win the rap battle, and keep the beat going all night.
About Friday Night Funkin
Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game about Boyfriend, a blue-haired singer who has to win a series of rap battles to date Girlfriend. Her father, a former rock star, is not thrilled about it. Created by ninjamuffin99, PhantomArcade, evilsk8r, and Kawai Sprite for Ludum Dare in 2020, it grew into a huge open-source hit with a thriving modding scene.
The gameplay borrows from classic arcade rhythm titles. Arrows scroll up the screen, and you press the matching direction when they line up with the target markers. Catchy original songs, expressive animation, and a colorful cast of opponents turn each week into a mini musical showdown. Multiple difficulty settings let beginners ease in while rhythm veterans push for perfect runs.
How to play Friday Night Funkin
Pick Story Mode to play through weeks of songs against different opponents, or Free Play to practice any song you have unlocked. During a song, arrows travel toward four receptors at the top of the screen. Press the matching arrow key the moment each note reaches its receptor, and hold the key for long sustained notes. Hitting notes fills your side of the health bar, while misses push it toward your opponent. If the bar empties completely, you lose the song. Survive to the end of every track in a week to beat that opponent and move on.
Controls
| Arrow Keys | Hit left, down, up, right notes |

Tips & strategy
- Rest your fingers on the arrow keys before a song starts so you never have to look down.
- Listen to the music instead of only watching the notes; the arrows follow the vocal rhythm.
- Warm up on Easy in Free Play before tackling Hard mode in Story Mode.
- Do not mash keys; extra presses count as misses and drain your health bar.
- If later weeks feel too fast, try the WASD layout, which some players find more comfortable.
Game features
- Arcade-style four-arrow rhythm gameplay
- Story mode with multiple themed weeks
- Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulties
- Catchy original soundtrack
